Hi all, For anyone who wants/needs an instant tried and tested Haiti earthquake lesson: Equipment: map of the world, pictures from Haiti enlarged on A3 paper so that they can be seen from the back of the classroom (try not to use anything too horrendous) BTW this was for my 8th grade aleph group but it could probably work for most grades and levels. 1. Stick map on board - see if kids know where Haiti is. 2. Brainstorm what the kids know about the earthquake. 3. Reinforce further by sticking the pictures up on the board and discussing them (vocab: relief agencies, rescue services, rubble, destruction, victims, survivors etc) 4. Divide kids into groups of 4-5. 5. Tell them each group is a relief agency. Their task: a) Think of three problems that need to be dealt with b) Discuss ways of solving them c) Come up with a name for the relief agency 6. Bring class together - divide board into as many columns as there are problems (food, health, policing etc). Groups present their ideas. 7. Class listens and decides on the three most practical ideas of all. I laid particular stress on the use of modal verbs (must, should etc) because, conveniently, that's what the class had been learning just before the earthquake struck. I'd love to hear if you've done anything similar.
