Imagine engaging in really COOL activities which employ all the "HOTs" . The debating over HOTs has, on occasion, become heated - but in the Sia'h Vva'Sig debate workshop, the only part of any teacher which got heated up was the heart, warmed by the sight of young students, of various ages and abilities, practicing debating skills in English. We witnessed pupils of different ages and with very diverse abilities in English honing their skills and exhibiting their abilities in comprehension, analysis, synthesis and evaluation of knowledge. I've just returned from the excellent workshop on the art of debate in English and would like to take this opportunity to praise said workshop, recommend it to all readers and thank Bronia Kabakovitch……., The Sia'h va' Sig Debate workshop for teachers provided an interesting and informative program which varied in both content and method. Theoretical explanations and (sometimes theatrical) demonstrations alternated with hands- on activities. We observed student debates as well as practiced debating and judging. Impressive young students from London, Scotland and Israel provided examples as well as explicit instructions and feedback. We learned from our own attempts and from each other. Leah Zinder gave an excellent workshop on interpersonal communication and public speaking. I left the workshop feeling enriched by the experience, motivated to implement more debating in more classes in my school and inspired to try and organize workshops in the north. I traveled far to participate in the Sia'h va'Sig workshop (from the Western Galilee to Lod) and have full satisfaction that the time and money invested was well worth it; this was a marvelous experience and I hope to return next summer. I would like to urge all etni readers to sign up for the debate workshops and to encourage their colleagues to do so, also. I can not end my account of the Sia'h va'Sig workshop without expressing my appreciation of Bronia Kabakovitch. Imagine the potential logistic nightmares involved for a solitary individual in charge of both the student and teacher workshops; yet Bronia did a brilliant job. Tirelessly racing about, with her finger on every pulse, Bronia insured that every teacher, pupil and guest lecturer knew where to go and what to do. In addition to overseeing the activities, paperwork, scheduling, and her own presentation, Bronia knew where the Bamba should be stored, who would pick up the chairs and when to hand out the ice lollies :> Bronia possesses an excellent style of firm yet kind..it was obvious that no student wished to displease her and all appreciated her attention. Kudos to you, Bronia!
