In reply to the recent emails about Hots, Id like to add my 2 cents. I actually enjoy teaching the Literature and find I can be fairly creative. What I am unhappy with is how many great pieces of literature are being put on a banned books list due to it not having a certain number of words. I have heard the argument (more than once) how the length must be similar to the texts on the exams -- and I completely disagree with this notion. Our students are not readers (at least mine) - and when I can find something that they love, that has amazing themes and messages, where they can learn something - then I resent the fact that I cannot teach it because it is missing x number of words. At least we should be able to present to our Inspector our Unit Planner for that text and let her decide if it is worthy enough. Also, why not be able to have an excerpt of a Shakespeare play (monologue) as a poem? Imagine being able to use Shylocks speech:" Hath not a Jew eyes?" And to the argument that I can still teach it, but not part of this program - I say two things: First, we barely have the time to teach what we must so (second) WHY NOT USE IT? Its brilliant, pertinent- and Id rather my students be exposed to this - than Ozymondias (no offense). Doing a Log is,in my mind, a labor of love. Most/All of the units need to be written by ourselves; there are no ready text books to go to. Every component is done with a lot of thought and detail. The students are working hard as are the teachers. So personally, my quest with this program is to break the chains, "think outside the box" and let the teachers doing the Log, choose great pieces of literature that they love with the approval of their Inspectors.
