[etni] Need help with Audacity

I've been following the thread about the new media demands (CDs, mp3 players
etc...). I downloaded Audacity but every voice recording that I do sounds like
I'm under water or about 20 m. from the mike. (And this is after I've recorded
with the mike practically in my mouth.)
I'm not technically challenged but I haven't figured this one out.
Could someone who has experience with Audacity help me - on or off the forum?
