Ah! It has been a pleasure seeing myself on two pictures on ETNI's strike album (My friend and colleague Relli, who sent them to ETNI, wrote that you could see my flamboyant pictures giving my historic speech at the first demo in Holon) Well, here's some more news from Holon: Last Friday, Nov. 2nd we drove along the streets of Holon and Bat Yam calling people to support our strike, etc. 26 cars full with teachers enjoyed 90 minutes of demonstrating and all that and were cheered by most of those who saw and heard us. You can watch a video and see some pictures if you have nothing better to do, of course http://www.flickr.com/photos/eduardodeholon/sets/72157602844933209/show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXbl_NgYHVU On Tuesday, Nov. 6th, some 20 striking Holon teachers gathered promptly yet efficiently to "welcome" Education Minister Prof. Yuli Tamir, who was coming to visit a primary school. She agreed to talk to us after meeting the school's staff and children. She did. She talked with us for one full hour, and heard some of the things that all of you fellow strikers would have said to her. She said she favored reform and improving our salaries. The fact that she met a group of striking teachers from the field means that by doing (demonstrating, expressing our views, etc.), we may make our voices heard. This means that all those who claim that this is not our ball game are wrong (they imply that the job should be done by others - our leaders or just anybody else). We, striking and active teachers everywhere in Israel DO make a difference (and even if the meeting in Holon has no direct impact on the outcome of the strike, the fact that our demands and voices are heard is important in itself) The meeting was, of course, arranged on the spot. I don't remember the government calling on us to meet the Education Minister. Incidentally,I think it was very good that she chose to speak to us (she could have ignored us, but she chose not to, and devoted a lot of time to us. I liked that.) It could have happened to any other demonstrating teachers, but never to those who take a wait-and-see attitude and stay out of this, or at home for no valid reason. It is their struggle, too. Again, you can watch a video and see some pictures if you have nothing better to do, of course: Video clip 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOqndHeomWo Video clip 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_snaeYDSL4 Video clip 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_pq_CBhShQ Picture album http://www.flickr.com/photos/eduardodeholon/sets/72157602961400627/show/ Since I was feeling a bit bored, not having anywhere to demonstrate in the Holon area, I joined colleagues from Holon and Tel Aviv on a bus to Jerusalem yesterday evening (Tuesday, Nov. 6th) and had the greatest of times singing halleluiahs next to the Labor Court. Again, I understand that our being there (some say 200 and others 300 merry folks attended the Gala) made a difference. We got back to Holon at 1.00 AM Etnians: it's not over until it is over! We might have to go on a bit more, but "they will not break us". Keep telling everybody on the list about what you think and do. The English teachers' crowd has this tendency of being there manning the front lines.
