I would like to add something to this. Many of us sent our regular 5-point
pupils (and even borderline 5-pointers) to module E this year, in the 11th
grade. I don't even want to think of what a blow it is to a kid's
self-confidence when he or she fails what is supposed to be the easiest part
of the 5-point exam. We all encourage our students by giving them positive
feedback and opportunities for success. I think that the easiest part of
their Bagrut exam should be an opportunity for success, as well. That is
certainly the case for 3-point students, and, after having seen the results
of module C, for 4-pointers, as well. Not all of our 5-pointers are
brilliant and outstanding in English. Some of them are just highly
motivated and really want 5 points in English, even though they're
struggling. Since one of the reasons for modularity is to allow students to
take their Bagrut exam over time, rather than all at once, I don't think
it's unreasonable to send kids to the first part at the end of 11th grade.
And I think that even the borderline 5-pointers should have a decent chance
of passing the exam -- they certainly shouldn't be getting grades in the
30s, which is what I saw several cases of at our school. And once a kid has
failed so miserably, it doesn't do him or her much good to be told that
there are more opportunities to take the exam. I know plenty of kids who
won't want to bother trying again after a grade like that.
