In response to Noel's query about cognate pictures for ABC, there is a similar but more effective method. All the material is available and free. The method is visual mnemonics. It was first developed for teaching the Russian alphabet to American kids, and since then it's been proven to work. The idea is that you find a word in the pupil's native language that sounds like the name of the letter. Then you give a visual image to connect the word with the name of the letter. So, for example, the letter H sounds like the Hebrew word for fire, aish. So we give a picture of a fire in the shape of an H. Etc. Etc. All this material can be found in my computer program, English for Beginners, which can be downloaded for free from www.english4students.com. The visual mnemonics for the ABC can be found in Level 1, lesson 1. That belongs to the part of the program which can be seen without activation code. Anyway, the activation code is free to all English teachers. Just e-mail me and I'll be glad to send it to you. By the way, the method is suitable only if your object is to teach the names of the ABC, rather than the sounds. Teaching the names is no easy task. I heard that someone did a study and found out that 20% of high school students don't know the names of the ABC. They know the first few letters, and after that it gets very hazy. Visual mnemonics provides a useful teaching tool. ************************************** ** Join ETNI on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/31737970668/ ** Visit ETNI Blog and Poll http://ask-etni.blogspot.co.il/ ** Etni homepage - http://www.etni.org ** post to ETNI List - etni@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ** help - ask@xxxxxxxx ***************************************
