Re Jennifer Bick's query.
I have been dealing with Scout translations for years. I was also a Guide in
England. One of the problems is that US and GB terminology are different.
Here are a few suggestions with a GB slant. Esther
Ofarim: For boys Cubs, (US. I believe, has cub-scouts), for girls Brownies
Madrich Ofarim (in GB an adult): For boys Cubmaster, for girls Brown Owl,
second in command:Tawney Owl
Zofim: Scouts, Guides (US Girl Scouts)
Teenage Zofim: Rovers, Rangers
Madrichim: Leaders:
Merakez: for boys Scoutmaster, for girls Captain, second in command
Lieutenant (GB)
Zogrim: (adult Scouts) Scouters, Guiders
Kvutza: Patrol (In most countries patrols are vertical not horizontal as in
Israel)
Shevet: roughly equivalent to Troop (for boys) and Company (for girls)
Rosh Shevet: I often use the US term Den Mother. In GB could be District
Commissioner
Hatsda'a: salute (not often used here)
Havtacha: Promise
Medura: Camp fire
