Shakespeare as pupils say they like it
By Steve Wieberg, USA TODAY

The last day of Anne Cognard's high school Shakespeare class is hardly an
exercise in dreary test-taking. Or a turn-in-your-term-papers,
count-down-the-final-minutes formality.

No, the longtime chair of Lincoln (Neb.) East High's English department sees
her students off with a final blast of creativity, a two-hour Shakespearean
event.
Twenty-nine pupils in Cognard's Shakespearean Drama class gathered late one
morning last week at her home on the eastern edge of Lincoln, little more
than a couple of miles from the school but about as far from a sterile
classroom setting as you can get. (Related story: Cognard's philosophy: Find

Cognard's philosophy: Find the 'Ah' moment
By Anne Cognard, Special for USA TODAY

How do students learn? How do I identify the needs of all students - from
special education to students for whom English is not their native language
to students who are "average" or "gifted"?

Teaching is more artistry than science, more organic than planned, more
serendipitous than mechanical. The interaction between teacher and student
is like the growth of an animal or human being: Chance combined with art
creates a miraculous result.

When asked about how his plays "work," director Peter Brook replied that one
chooses the roles for each actor (student), the vision (curriculum), the
approach (pedagogy) and the collegiality one brings oneself (teacher). Then
one rehearses (the daily process of learning and taking chances). If
everything works, there is a moment when one says, "Ah." If not, one says,
"We tried."
