Students failed by language system The Australian - August 11, 2006 SCHOOLS are failing students with poor spelling and grammar and the time has come to reintroduce the direct teaching of basic language skills. Federal Education Minister Julie Bishop said yesterday the results of Year 7 literacy tests in NSW this year revealed that fewer than half the students tested could identify verbs or adjectives and only 7 per cent could spell "definitely". Ms Bishop said the results were unacceptable and were the result of specific lessons on grammar and spelling being dropped. "These results indicate we are failing our students, the system is failing the students," she said.
