Dear Colleagues,
This time next week we will be in our classrooms and thinking about the
coming week off.
Do you know how to transliterate the Hebrew ×× ××× ? On googling I found a
site that gave 16 different spellings.
http://joemaller.com/601/sixteen-ways-to-spell-hanukkah/
I used to tell my student teachers to either use the English translation or
be consistent with the variation they chose.
What are you doing in your classroom? We have a whole week to take our
students outside the textbook and give them some information about the
holiday.
One idea I like is to ask the students what they plan to do over the
holiday? I also like to get them to talk about family traditions associated
with the holiday. They can write it down, write a poem about the holiday or
explain the history and traditions. These can then be put up on the
corkboard in your classroom.
Chapter 2 of my book *The Cycle of the Jewish Year: A Feast of Activities*
deals with the holiday.
The direct link is *http://web.macam.ac.il/~bev/Book/2%20hanukkah.htm

The site can also be accessed through the ETNI site
(elementary teachers - holidays - cycle of the Jewish year)
Did you find something suitable? Let me know. Do you have other ideas?
Again let me know.
As usual feedback is appreciated. [ bev@xxxxxxxxxxx ]
Enjoy the lights....
