Option I book: The first poem that my class read was THE ROAD NOT TAKEN. We did it 'together'. Introductory background material about the author followed by a discussion about decisions we have made/may make in various stages in our lives and their consequences, situations given in which decisions have to be made ........ and then the usual analysis of the poem via LOTS and HOTS. We 'finished' the first poem. For homework I wrote on the board: TRY and read the next poem, INTRODUCTION TO POETRY, on your own. The following lesson, I asked how it had gone. Every student [except for one] said s/he had been at a total loss to understand the second poem although basically, I had simply allowed my students to follow what Billy Collins had wanted them to do [as expressed in his poem]: figure the poem out by/for themselves. We then analyzed his poem in class together, LOTS/HOTS, etc. Afterwards, I posed the following questions: Do you agree with the message in INTRODUCTION TO POETRY? Working THAT way, were you better able to understand the meaning of the poem? A resounding NO was the consensus. They preferred the previous way of reading and analyzing the poem together in the class with me, the teacher. It was a very interesting experiment. See how YOUR students react and what they have to say......and please let us all know. thank you. Phyllis Oded -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter.
