Hi All, I haven't been singing on the street since the teachers' strike ended in the fall. But lest I rest on my laurels.... I've been asked to support the social workers in song in tomorrow's Beersheva demo at 4 PM by the Pedagogical Center on Sderot Rager. (The protesters will be marching from Ben Gurion U. to the lawn stage at 3:45) What will I be singing? To start with, a feminist protest song to the tune of "Whiskey in the Jar", new lyrics co-penned with 2 social work students. The funny thing is that they brought me some words to the melody of the Hebrew song - "Seeman she atah tza-eer". As we were fine-tuning the lyrics, it hit me....the tune is Irish! Go know where a song will end up! - Charles Seeger called it "the folk process". They've also got a new version of "Machar". I'll do a few traditional labor protest songs, with relevant verses, in English, too! So, if you're in the neighborhood and want to make your voice heard against privatization of the social services, join us there. Laurie
