I would like to express appreciation of the accurate and well-argumented
analysis of the new program that David R. Herz offered in his letter. Two
observations concerning the program itself and the way it is introduced
deserve the Ministry's attention:

"Pro-social orientation, motivation to continue learning on
one's own, capacity to synthesize and analyze - there is also a lot of research
that shows that the underlying system's design works against those same values".

and

"One of our problems in education is that we are not willing to
question our underlying assumptions about students, about education and about
teachers and teaching".
I believe that by entrusting us, teachers, with answering the question:"Why do
we teach literature?" rather than:" How much can  we squeeze out of teaching
literature?" would be good for our students.          Wishing everybody a good-
literature-filled vacation, Sima.
