[etni] a political issue worth discussing

My two older kids started school today (their school starts a few days
early and then they're off between Yom Kippur and Sukkot). When they
came home with their schedules, I was shocked. Last year, my
daughter, who was then in 7th grade, studied until 1:30 every day
except for Tuesday and Friday. This year, two more days have been
shortened and in the junior high (or at least in the 7th and 8th grade
-- I assume it's the same in the 9th grade), meaning that they study
until 1:30 only twice a week.

I am absolutely shocked by the number of hours that have been cut over
the past few years. And not only have hours been cut, but classes
have gotten bigger instead of smaller. Of course, with bigger
classes, it's probably a good thing that they're studying for fewer
hours -- that means fewer opportunities for violent behavior, which
seems to be on the rise (My daughter came home today covered in spit
-- she got off the bus and someone spit on her from the window. This
is apparently so "routine" that it didn't even bother her -- she just
came in the door and wiped off her back and asked me if she had spit
on her back).

So is this our punishment for not accepting the Dovrat recommendations
with open arms? Education will be pushed back into the Dark Ages
until the teachers are willing to accept the "reforms"?

By the time my 3rd grader reaches junior high, I'm afraid that school
is going to be a 2-hour morning activity once or twice a week.
