As a qualified EFL teacher from Australia with 9 years teaching experience, I got a job immediately in Israel in a local high school. Despite the appalling conditions and the really difficult students I would have continued to work there if the pay had been reasonable. The fact that I have to work another 12 hours a week just to scrape by, has made teaching in a school here unaffordable for me. I was paid $64,000 per annum at my last school however, as Barry said, those private Jewish school fees were a killer. On the other hand my children were at school until 4pm, like me. Here they finish at 12:45 whilst I finish after 3. Finding a solution for them is not easy. So why have I resigned? Simply because I can. As a native English speaker there are so many job opportunities out there, both in teaching and out, that it makes more sense financially to leave. As Daniel said the red tape was ridiculous and my qualifications have not been recognised and won't be, unless I go back and retrain. So like most anglo saxons I have resigned after only one year of teaching in Israel. The bottom line is always the pay. Pay more and you'll have more teachers. Jane Cohen
