Following the ETAI International conference, a number of people have posted messages to the ETNI list praising the conference but also complaining about the conference fees. It's important that people understand what the fees cover and the financial responsibility ETAI undertakes when putting on an international conference, so some clarification is in order. ETAI is a non-profit organization run totally by volunteers: absolutely no one profits from the conference fees except for the attendees. The fees charged for the conference, plus income from exhibiting publishers and as many outside sponsors as we could find, have just about covered its cost (hopefully - we don't have the final figures yet). Renting the hotel - which people praised for its comfort - is very expensive. The international speakers who are not otherwise sponsored have their travel and accommodation subsidized by ETAI; their attendance at the conference and their contribution to it is what makes the event truly 'international', and so varied. Furthermore, the level and quality of this ETAI conference was equal to or even greater than most international conferences around the world but here conference fees for attendees are substantially less than what is charged for participation in similar events abroad. It's wonderful to be part of a community of English teachers that makes an effort to support its members with a voluntary professional organization that provides a platform for sharing and development for all English teachers in the country at all levels and from all sectors. ETAI does its best to keep all fees as low as possible to allow for maximum participation in all events. This is possible through the generosity of all the volunteers who freely give of their time to allow ETAI to fulfill its mission. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank again all those who contributed to the success of this conference, including the many ETNIers who are ETAI members and were conference volunteers, presenters and participants.
