Subject: Re: discrepancy in grades

Hi,
This was the first year that I had a very large discrepancy between my
"magen" grades & the
actual grade that the students received on the "F" test. I usually have a
3 - 5 point spread,
this year the difference was astounding. Part of my grade was based on
practice exams given in
class, and the students' grades were much better than on this exam. I know
that I tend to be a
hard marker on my practice exams, so I really can't account for the
difference. I have already
been approached by several students who want to have their grade
reconsidered. These are not
kids who think that they are better than they actually are - these are good,
solid students who
usually score above an 85. They checked their answers against the "day after
reviews" and,
although these are not official answers, they do give the students a pretty
fair picture of the
results. Even if you take an especially difficult standard for spelling &
grammar, they simply
don't understand the grade that they
 received.

Personally I have a problem with the validity of an exam that can have
such a wide point
spread from year to year. My kids worked very hard and had to do a lot of
work for me. True -
some of the grade was based on alternative assessment - which is a policy
that is strongly
encouraged by the English Inspectorate; but the test grades that my students
received were very
far out of line with what they are capable of. I can only hope that the
summer exam will give
them the opportunity to show what they know.

  Best,
  Ariella Kopels
