Hots is an atrocious acronym for HIGHER ORDER THINKING SKILLS, WHICH are
being forcibly inserted up the agenda of Literature Bagrut Teaching.
To force schools which simply ignored teaching Literature for the past ten
years or so because it 'isn't tested' to YES teach it, everybody now has to
fit their teaching into a rigorous set of procedures and rubrics, garnished
with more buzzwords to learn. While the program has had great success with
some teachers in some schools, usually high level schools, an overwhelming
number of teachers (including almost all the ones I studied the program
with), feel frustrated and insulted.
Nobody seems to remember that a language is in itself "extraordinarily
complex, and that it involves highly absrtact organizational principles."
(Langbacker, Languages and Its Structure, 1967). Just reading a text at a
level just above your own is challenging enough, and incorporates High Order
Th Skills anyway. To double the pleasure; that is, to make our hundreds of
thousands of milddle -and -down level cope with the doubly complex task is
asking for trouble.

skills for Dummies) in one or both of my presentations.
