Subject: Books for Israel Project in trouble

I'd like to report to all that yesterday a Bar Mitzvah
class from Atlanta, Georgia, now in Israel, made a
stop at our library to do a mitzvah. Each pupil had packed a few books in his/her suitcase to donate to our school library. This was organized through Books for Israel.
It was a very heart-warming and exciting event and both sides pledged to maintain ties.

Unfortunately, Books for Israel may not continue to function, as it has, much much longer. Ilan Bar-Shalom informed me this morning that he is no longer able to carry on his volunteer work with the project. In addition to the many hours involved, there are also other administrative costs that cannot be avoided in running such a project. The Bar-Shaloms have been footing the bill on their own for a long time.

Ilan also told me that he has written to Judy Steiner and she
is aware of the situation. However, she hasn't solved the problem to date. Ilan has asked the Ministry to help with funding this amazing project. No need here to reiterate how much it has helped us and continues to help us in providing our learners with books, fiction and non-fiction. We are expected to follow the curriculum, facilitate extensive reading and projects, yet the Ministry provides no funding for this. Our school library's English corner was pathetic till we joined Books for Israel.

I intend to write a letter to Judy Steiner, requesting her support and immediate help in keeping Books for Israel alive. I encourage all your ETNIers to also write, especially those who are part of the project.

Last but not least, we had a lovely evening here at Midreshet Ben Gurion last night and this morning I deposited donations collected for Jade . Ilan sounded most optimisitic and said
that Jade is getting back onto her feet again folllowing a few
really rough and frightening weeks. He hopes she'll be able to
make it up to Ma'alot on Dec. 1 to the concert at ORT Jr. High there.
