From: "Adele Raemer and Laurie Levy" <raemer@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: RE: goal of English as a Second language in Israel I remember being told at a conference quite a few years ago, that teaching English in Israel has changed from being teaching EFL to almost ESL, since ALL Israelis are surrounded by the language everywhere they go. As Esther wrote about non-native English speakers wanting to practice their English on English speakers (a thing that used to bother me, but now I love it!), and television, advertisements, road signs (will those start to be in Russian? I wonder!) popular music and movies, not to mention, the Internet (and probably more things that don't come to mind now). I have a feeling that there is also a status thing going on here - the status of the English language, as opposed to the Russian language - in Israel, as well as throughout the world.
