Subject: back to school: printers
Dear all -=20
talking of "back to school" chores -
some of you may be considering some computer
upgrades to make sure you are properly equipped
for the coming school year. This may include a new
printer. I'd like to share with you my own experience
in hope it may help some of you.
I've been using laser printers for ages - the one I
own now is my 4th printer since 1997. It has never
been too cheap (the one I own now was bought for
NIS 1750 two years ago) - but what you spend on
the printer will be soon saved on consumables
(toner cartridges instead of ink cartridges you used
to buy for your inkjet printer). A single cartridge of
toner (NIS200) prints 7,000 pages (!) compared to
about 500 pages you can print using the equivalent
amount of ink that NIS 200 will buy. 14 times
cheaper printing per page.
Now, a few weeks ago two colleagues who mistook
me for an expert :) asked for advice - what to buy.
I use an online price comparing service called Zap
(http://www.zap.co.il , highly recommended!) and
what I found there was a Xerox 3116 laser printer
for NIS 430. Both colleagues bought it on the spot
(24-hour delivery!) and say they are happy with the
printing quality as well as the price.
Out of "'satiable curiosity" (while looking for toner
cartridges for my printer) I checked today: the price
has gone down even further. Today you can buy
one for NIS 410 at
http://www.madpeset.co.il/shopexd.asp?id=3D795
including free delivery.
Don't miss it folks. (I hope you realize I have no
personal interest in selling you this :)
And when you run out of toner (one year? Two years?
The toner that comes with the printer is good for 1500
pages - how long will that last?) you can buy a
replacement (prints 3000 pages!) for just NIS 175
(maybe even less - check Zap!).
I am not saying "dump your inkjet printer." Sometimes
you may really need color output - but 90+% all you
need is a worksheet that will be xeroxed in b/w anyway
- why waste 14 times more than you should?! Keep your
color inkjet for these infrequent occasions.
If you are really serious and have suddenly found some
money you don't know what do to with, you can even
buy a color laser printer for less than NIS 1500 - but
this is something I have not tried out yet. Ask around
before buying it!
Best -
Lev
