Subject: calculating grades for Bagrut
Maybe I should not be writing this but... the calculation of the 'tzion
shnati" is almost a nightmare !! We have to work within the parameters
of both our school's demands and the ministry. Our school has a policy
that the final tzion shnati is either 20-30% for the mocks.. (usually two !!!)
and the rest is their report card grade.. What we (the English staff)
have done is make up the 70- 80% report card grade using the 30%
project or literature grade. Is this complicated?? You bet!!! Is it correct??
who knows?? Is it problematic,, quite often.. !! We have weak students
who work really hard, and get fairly good grades, etc so their report
card grade is high, but then their mocks are low as they are weak..
(many are classified as O7 kids but not all) . Therefore in certain
cases their "tzion shnati/ magen" is too high. Thus a discrepancy !!!
So without going into whether we should teach literature and do
projects.(because if I had to give up either, I might leave teaching)
I will just conclude by saying that the whole issue of how the final
'tzion shnati' is calculated is extremely problematic.and needs to
be reevaluated and discussed by those in power.
