This reminds me that in my day at some universities, eg Oxford, attendance at lectures for modern language learners was not compulsory.

You only went to lectures if you felt like it. Of course there were
tutorials for small groups doing translations, or for defending essays when it was one to one. I suppose these are luxuries in most universities today. But why shouldn't students use on line material if it is helpful, surely it lessens the teacher's load. Teachers' evaluation of students can come via exams.
