Dear Colleagues,
I think that one of the most enjoyable part of
my job is teaching Literature and although I can
make some suggstions I'd rather make a recommendation
- find what YOU like & teach it. I think that you have
to be able to give to your student's some of your own passion
about a written work. That being said I can give you a few pointers:

1. I often try to keep a common thread that connects the
pieces that I teach. It makes it much easier for the kids to
compare and contrast the stories. Last year my theme was
reading & I taught such works as Malamud's "A Summer's Reading"
& a lovely piece from the New York Times called "The Books of Summer".
Other year's I've dealt we the topic of how we relate to our
"enemies", so some of the stories were Saki's "The Enemy",
Pirandello's "War" and Weisenthal's "The Sunflower.

2. In order to teach a good story you need good sources. There are
wonderful compendiums available in this country. The publishers
don't need me to advertise for them , but you should have a few
in your school library. If not there is a wonderful site on the
Internet called "Short Stories East of the Web":
http://www.eastoftheweb.com/short-stories/indexframe.html

The nice thing about it is the way it is organized - genre, topic,
audience and story length.
They have classic short stories that you may have studied as a
student and some interesting modern short stories as well.

3. Like Barry, I am not a big "affecionado" of "All My Sons",
I teach "Our Town" - which is a little different, has student
friendly vocabulary and I love it.

4. Poetry - there are many fine sites on the Internet for Poetry.
Two that I frequently use are Poetry Org:
http://poetryfoundation.org/

and the site of the American Academy of Poets:
http://poets.org/ - they have a great section for educators,
and believe it or not I've found some lovely poems in "O" Magazine -
you just never know what Oprah is going to come up with next.

I hope that this helps -

Best,
Ariella Kopels
