The best thing to do is to use them. However, I think knowing the basic structure of the language is useful. I've taken a stab at this at http://www.theherzes.com/VME.html. My thought here was that the structure is actually very regular, and that if students get what a helping verb is and can identify that, they won't go trying to add don't to create abominations like "don't (with or without 'have') seen the movie." But I'll also admit I haven't seen any research about whether such an approach is helpful or not, so I'll leave it for you to decide. Does anyone have by any chance good flashcards or tables that summarize the tenses in English grammar in a short and clear way? I would be grateful if you could share them with me. Thanks!
