It is always easy to claim that English spelling is inconsistent.
In point of fact linguistics have found that 87% of English words are
written based on spelling rules. Unfortunately many of the 13% that have
irregular spelling are high frequency words giving the impression that
English spelling is chaotic
For anyone who is interested in learning English spelling rules the
following books may be of interest. Bev Hornsby's Alpha to Omega,
The Hickey Multisensory Language course has a very helpful chapter on
spelling
