[etni] nothing personal

Hi all,

Yes, it's me again (*sigh) back to say a few words about ETNI standards and
guidelines (no, there are no benchmarks or anything modular to this
message).

I want to remind you that it is important that we don't get personal when
replying to messages. If you don't like a person's point of view, relate to
the issue at hand, rather than personally attacking the writer of the
message and his or her ancestors. If your message gets too personal, a
rather complex mathematical algorithm schleps it over to the too_personal
bin. There is a collection of messages there that have been trading insults
for quite some time, now.

So think twice before you are a little too quick on the trigger.

And while we are here, regarding the volunteering of our time ...

I understand the views raised by teachers regarding low pay and the low
respect which leads to such low pay. When people think they are going to get
something for free, why should they offer to pay for it? There is little
that teachers can do to improve their salary. Every little bit helps,
especially for those teachers (single parents, etc.) who are just trying to
finish the month.

However, I also understand those people who say that some things are so
important to them, that they are willing to volunteer their time - because
they are almost certain that such things will never come into being,
otherwise.

I am not saying that we should readily volunteer our time for everything
that comes along. But some things may warrant this. In my own personal
experience, I have been running the ETNI list / website / etc. for over
twelve years completely on a voluntary basis, some of it out of my own
pocket. Why do I do it? For the love of it, I guess. Corny, eh?

There are side effects, though. My wife threatened divorce a few years back,
stating that I am such a schmuck for giving out something for free. And now
that I think of it, I haven't seen her around lately ....

In any case, remember that there are many sides to an issue. Let's agree to
disagree. And if you want to hurl insults at someone, do it to me. I can
take it. I'm from Toronto.

David
