I was hired to teach 2 classes of Ethiopian Jews who are fairly recent
arrivals. About half of them are around the 5th-6th grade level; that is, they
can identify words of body parts, clothing, colors etc. They can read and
answer simple questions.
It's very hard to find reading passages from today's textbooks, which try to
stimulate the student's interest. Topics like extreme summer camps or pet
rentals are too far from their experience.
I came across a nice text in a diagnostic exam for the beginning of the seventh
grade. It consisted of two e-mails: In the first, a boy asks his friend what
would be a good birthday present for a 97 year old grandfather, who likes
football but can't play, likes songs but forgets the words etc...
The friend suggests a radio.

I found this text perfect for my students, as all the elements were within
their world experience (I checked: They celebrate birthdays.) They were
thrilled to be able to read and understand a complete text with its problem and
perfect solution. Now we can get to work on the questions, which, as I have
heard from several teachers is a whole new ballgame because their thought
processes are non Western.

Do you have any suggestions for more texts like this?

/Barry
