To ETNI Tonight Boyar School teachers and management invited all the pupils and parents to a gathering to examine what is happening regarding the struggle for better education. Last week we, the teachers, divided up the class lists and personally phoned every home to invite families to attend. The auditorium overflowed with many parents and pupils having to stand in the aisles. The principal (Ester Shaked) spoke as well as a parents' representative, two grade 12 representives and one from grade 11. The chairperson of the school action (strike) committee (Anat Pik) explained succinctly and yet with authority and depth the process by which the educational system has been eroded and what has driven teachers to finally say "Enough!". After that we broke up into groups to allow for much more personal expression. It is clear that this event made the issues of the struggle much much much clearer to the parents and pupils - something which seems almost impossible to achieve through the press. I recommend this type of event to other schools who have not made personal contact with the parents. It is a lot more effective than a letter or an email and passes on the message that this the struggle has as much to do with parents who are not teachers than it has to do with teachers Jack Pillemer http://www.schooly.co.il/boyer_english http:www.geocities.com/jackpillemer
