Avraham Roos asked:
> Does anyone know where, when and why the word "pilot" because "test" or
> "trial".

The Barnhart Dictionary of Etymolgy says:
"The adjectival meaning of serving as a guide, prototype or experimental version
of some project or undertakikng (as in a pilot study, a pilot program,
a pilot film)
is first recorded in 1928."

The std derivation of "pilot" is from Greek pedon = steering oar.
I think the reversal of "dolphin" has influenced its meaning.
The pilot whale is a true dolphin.

Order:Cetacea
Suborder:Odontoceti
Family:Delphinidae
Genus:Globicephala

Notice the connection with "Delphi", the oracle of Apollo
and hence the association with determining the future.

The dolphin / porpoise swims in front of sailing ships
as if it were leading them.
