That's exactly what we do in our school!!! We do start some of the literature program in 10th grade (both for 4 and 5 pointers) but we don’t do more than 2 literary pieced throughout the whole year as most of the year is devoted to the rest of English teaching. The students do E and C at the end of 10th grade (4 or 5 pointers). Then in 11th grade the whole year is devoted to the log. We finish all the literary pieces and make sure everyone has a nice prepared log to be submitted after Pesach. In 12th grade we focus on the project and the final module E or G. It's much more sensible to do it this way and the fact that we start with the pieces in 10th grade and the bagrut at the end of 10th grade allows us to make sure that everyone is sitting in the right place. Those who don't can still make the shift at the beginning of 11th since they only missed 2 literary pieces and we try to do similar ones in the 4 and 5 point classes and then those who move up just have to do some more extra work and those who go down to 4 points don't need to do anything. Does that sound sensible? Being totally immersed in LOGS and preparations for turning in the final grades for them has set me thinking or perhaps dreaming. Would it be possible to teach the literature modal in all schools only in the eleventh grade? If the program could be revised a bit to make this proposal doable, there could be some advantages. First of all, neither teachers nor students would feel that there was too much emphasis on literature and not enough time for "teaching." Although I feel that the literature program is essential and genunine teaching, it has begun to cast too giant a shadow. We would know that for that for year, literature is our mission. Stronger students could take the E/C in 10th grade. Weaker ones could take both E and G/C and E in winter and summer of 12th grade. Teachers could devote the proper amount of time and effort as they would not being doing the LOGS for more than one class. Those teaching for the test would not have to encourage cramming and other shortcuts in 12th grade for materials learned over three years. There would be no reason not to use literary texts in 10th or 12th grades when apporpiate and in whatever way suits our classes or the materials we are working with.. What do you think? Does this make sense or sound off the wall?
