One of my objections to the HOTS log is the fact that the internal grade
BECOMES the final grade. How many times ( this week?) do I have
parents/pupils trying to make up for no=projects, no book reprots so that
the tziyun shnati is NOT ruined. I can't wait for the future: a log of 3
years to be crammed into a week's work with the private teacher, or
purchased online or whatever?. I have already been threatened IN THE
TEACHERS ROOM BY PARENTS because of dissatisfaction with an internal school
grade. And when that grade becomes THE FINAL grade

"I walked into school yesterday, the day of the Bargut, feeling as if I was
recovering from a flu I never had. Every muscle was in agony and I was
exhausted. This is was all due to the week that was really rather a dreadful
one - all due to the publishing of the school grade aka Magen."

I haven't written to the list for ages mainly because I retired several years
ago and have been grateful for being out of system. But these two postings
(some of which appear above) pushed me to add my two pence worth as they
reflect my own experiences over the years, and the specific experience of my
last year teaching bagrut before retirement. That year I taught a good 11th
grade class who took module E at the end of the year, and a VERY weak 3 point
group some of whom were really 1 point level. Just like Eleanor I was
physically threatened by the violent father of a 3 point student who had not
done her "performance task" among other things, and of course protested the
school grade. This happened in the staff room in the presence of the Bagrut
proctors who had just come for their instructions.
I also had many protests from the 11th grade class about their grades because I
insisted that schhol grades are not a "shuk".
After the exam I wrote a letter to the deputy head who was responsible for the
high school since I knew that the school administration almost always supported
the pupils rather than the teachers in this situation. I must add that it left
a very bitter taste and I left the school feeling saddened and frustrated. It
was certainly not the way I would have chosen to go on retirement.
The recent postings only show that nothing has changed and there doesn't seem
to be any way out.
Regretfully
Yehudit
