I attended the wonderful ETAI conference and the pre-conference workshops and want to thank all those who organized, presented and otherwise made the event so exciting, renewing and worthwhile. If I can still say that after 30 years of attending ETAI conferences, just think what others who have never attended are missing! Adele brought up the topic of using smart phones in the classroom. This is a topic I have been looking into for the past year and I'm happy that it has come to this forum and hope the discussion will be lively. There were at least 2 talks about this subject at the conference with lots of material to think about and look into. Let's not forget that not everyone on the list attended these workshops or has looked into this subject. So I'd like to suggest that when you send your ideas to the list, you assume zero and provide definitions/explanations for technical terms, the level of class the activity is meant for, the type of phone that can handle the activity, whether each kid/pair of kids, one in the class, etc. needs to have the phone in order to do the activity, links to the relevant apps (applications for the smartphone) and where to download it, and if possible an article/blog/mail reference for further information. For example, Adele wrote: "Another use is to make barcodes with information encoded, and have the kids use their smartphones to decode the information. Again - not every kid needs a smartphone for this." Thank you for this great idea. Now, how do I make a barcode with encoded information? What apps do I need for it? For what phone? How do the kids use their phones to decode? What apps? An example of what kind of info?
