I have been teaching this poem for at least 6 years (in 10th and 11th grade 5 point classes.) this year (11th grade) was the first time that a few things happened - 1. when i asked them what leaders they could think of who were assassinated, no one mentioned Gandhi - not the ones from India, and not Rehavam Ze'evi. 2. When I gave out the poem, one of the girls (usually very bright) said to me "you know, this is a translation of a Hebrew song." !!! (she was referring to Naomi Shemer's translation / adaptation of Whitman's poem.) ×?×?×?×? ×?פ×?×?ת ×?×?×?ר ....
