[etni] the dark side of HOTS

I want to address two issues here, the implementation of the new HOTS
program and compensation for learning and implementing the program.

I have taken a HOTS lit. course despite the union directives. I felt I
needed to know "more" about it before I voiced my opinion and took up our
case with the union. I am not at all convinced that this is the right path
to take.

Yes, I think it was important to bring lit. back into the curriculum and
have it tested on the exam. I say this sadly because while many of us have
been fulfilling the curriculum requirements and sometimes even surpassing
them, others have not. My colleagues and I have been doing creative and
thought-inspiring literary projects all along. I feel myself being cramped
and locked into a "formula" now and loathe the idea.

I'm not saying that HOTS have no place in education. I'm saying there are
better places to apply them. I'm saying that now, I feel the emphasis will
fall too much on learning the HOTS rather than the literature.

NO LESS IMPORTANT, I am very concerned about our lack of compensation for
learning the ropes of this newly-concocted program. We must all hound the
union to give priority to our situation. Other subject teachers have been
given hours to learn their new programs. We should get the same
consideration. It is crystal clear in my mind that the new program, and
especially the LOG, will be extremely demanding time-wise. We need to be
compensated here, too. Do not tell me to choose the test option. That is not
even an option, in my opinion, at my school. It doesn't match the teaching
styles of our staff nor the learning styles of our pupils.

I plan on calling the union day in and day out to get them moving. Please do
the same! Call your local offices and call the Tel Aviv office. I'm
disappointed and frustrated with the union's non-action on this till now.
However, we have no other union and must go through these channels.

The only bright light I can see right now is that retirement is around the
corner!
