Its open to interpretation among the various carriers. You do have to obtain permission to use gps equipment while in flight. Just give the flight attendant a note asking permission which she or he will bring to the pilot.

Subject: [gps-talkusers] GPS on commercial aircraft

Hello to All,

I know that folks on this list have used GPS while flying on commercial
aircraft. I'm wondering if there are any firm rules about this, or is it
open to interpertation among the various carriers?
