Following up on my message about using phone-based GPS and Navigon, I did some more testing. It would appear to me that Navigon puts some or perhaps all of its maps on the iPhone. I set my iPhone to Airplane mode so no phone service or WiFi would be turned on. I still got my position with Navigon, however it told me I could not calculate a route without a better GPS connection.

I couldn't tell if it found my position with only my local map segment on the phone or if all the maps were on it. Does anyone else know? In any event, in my experience, Navigon is useful for some functions like finding nearby POIs if you don't have phone service but it won't let you calculate a route.
