Jay,
There is no initializing required for the Earthmate and Sendero GPS. Your
first attempt to gain satellites may take a extended period of time. This
is due to the Earthmate receiver doing a "cold start". Once the receiver
has located the satellites in your current location the Earthmate will
remember there location and detecting satellites will occur faster.

The Booklett Talked about initializing. What do I do concernning the
