Bob and I were in Hawaii last week for our niece's wedding, which fortunately was Friday. Because we woke up Saturday morning at 4 a.m. and turned on the local news, only to hear that the earthquake in Chile was causing a tsunami that was predicted to hit a little after 11 a.m. They were already showing the local Walmart, where shoppers were buying out the water and stuff. So while I went to the grocery store to stand in line with the other water-buyers, he called the other family members. All of our hotels were within the evacuation zones. His sister got the name of an inland, higher elevation elementary school, and sent a text message to everyone to meet there. I didn't have a map or my little Garmin gps, so it was pretty cool to be able to find it in the Sendero POIs and rely on his directions to get us there. And it was a fun conversation piece while we were sitting on the bluff waiting for the wave to hit. Everyone within earshot knew our elevation and how far we were from the shore, not to mention a bunch of other stuff about the neighborhood we found ourselves in. It was quite reassuring to hear "300 feet" rather than the "near sea level" that was announced as we were beginning our drive up the hill! And while there was actually a tsunami, we were very grateful that it was a little baby one, and that they gave the "all clear" by early afternoon.
