Hello John,
The app shouldn't work while on a phone call, but sometimes it does which is
an apple bug, since all background sound should be suppressed while on a
phone call.
If you haven't upgraded to iOS 7 you will only hear the sound effects in the
background for route upcoming turns, arriving at your destination etc. Only
under iOS 7 will the app give you voice output while in the background. The
app does announce intersections as well while in the background as well as
POIs and route turns, so I am not sure what you are referring to unless you
have not upgraded your phone to iOS7.

Thanks for the update to the Seeing Eye gps. I had occasion to use the
background mode last week to try it out during a walk and like the fact that
it cuts out the amount of information you receive, leaving in the upcoming
intersection which is the most valuable info at least for me.
Does this mode work while on a phone call?
