I would suggest something like the mophie juice pack. This will just about
double your battery life, and, it will allow you to charge your device using a
standard micro USB cable instead of Apple's proprietary cables. Unfortunately,
many of the common bluetooth receivers do not work with the iphone, the holux
1000, iblue 737 and qstarz 818 are prime examples. I think any receiver that
does work must be Apple approved, admitedly, this is one of many pet peves I
have about IOS, it's far too restrictive. All of these receivers work great on
Android devices.

All of these GPS apps suck a lot of battery, especially when using Bluetooth
and Wi-Fi at the same time. I have seen the battery go down as much as 20%
per hour using Navigon and also on the Seeing Eye GPS app.
I have the Garmin Glo receiver and will do a test soon to compare battery
drain with and without this external receiver. If anyone has another
receiver or the Garmin, please test as well. This will be valuable feedback
for folks.
Many of us have back-up batteries because of this and other apps that
necessitate extra power for power users.
