Hi Mike,
Just some feedback on the podcast.
You don't need the lookaround wand on to have it announce upcoming intersections or nearby POIs automatically. Intersections should be announced when you are within 200 feet of the intersection. You only get that announcement once, it is true it doesn't keep updating until you get to the intersection as it is already focused on the intersection ahead of you at that point. I noticed in the podcast the sound that was played before the intersection was announced. This is a nearest intersection lookaround event that was automatically fired.
The wand only applies to announcements when turning the phone.

You keep saying the nearest POI isn't announced unless you have the wand on, this is also incorrect. As you are walking, every 15 seconds or so the nearest POI should be announced without having the wand on if the nearest POI changes. I can't remember if there is a distance limit for lookaround POI events, but I have seen them 900 to 1.2 miles away.

If you walk and are not getting any POIs, then I would suggest creating a route and sending the route logs under settings so it can be duplicated.

At the point of the POI search, you can also dictate using the dictate button instead of typing.

Also shaking the phone on the route screen will announce the heading/distance to the next turn in your route. That might be better to focus on instead of the heading/distance to the intersection.

The app gives you directions as a combo left/right and clock face.
12:00 says ahead, 3 says right, 6 says behind and 9 says left.
When you get other directions instead of it saying ahead and right you get1:00 or 2:00.

The wave file is used for arrived near destination as it is more noticeable than just having voiceover announce it. Also one thing you didn't touch on is the fact when you arrive near the destination the route is closed and you are switched to a getting warmer method so the heading/distance is announced every 15 seconds or so for up to two minutes. This gives you an additional way to find the destination and not just one arrived near destination message.
