I had a similar frustration when I first ran into i3, but then I worked out
how to get a decent amount of customization going and mapped left and right
keys to +1/-1 and up down keys to +10/-10, as well as adding Mod+T to go to
a direct workspace.
I wrote a blog post on it here (with more info and links to the config):

Hi,
i3 doesn't place any limit on how many workspaces you have or how you
make them. Just define key bindings to reach whatever workspace you
want.
Thanks, I was reading the man page late at night and I just couldn't
figure this out ;)
