seems to work, but stores password with no encryption, and icon size
does not match with i3 bar size.

I highly recommend claws-mail system. Not only it has a beautiful
keybindings strategy, it also does perform well with gmail imap
(labels=displayed as folders), have nice offline mode (which *does*
actually work the way I expect this). All of those things do work well
together.
Claws displays the icon, with status notificator (gree/red/etc).
