At least in the Indian market there is no corresponding demand for Linux
geeks.

My personal experience and what I hear from friends.
Only a proper survey can tell whether the job opportunities on Linux
have been growing year over year or not.
No.
I don't think a survey can reveal anything.
We can smell it in the air you know.
Linux is still a very much niche area and I have seen that this has
not changed much since late '98.
And the other thing I realized is that the job opportunities in
Chennai are far fewer and far between compared to Bangalore.
This also has not changed.
So if someone says that Linux professionals are in demand and
increasing at 30% a year I can't but wonder at that remark.
Even for sys admins where Linux knowledge is mostly desired it is
still only a fraction.
If a company maintains its UNIX servers elsewhere or if it is relying
on commercial vendors then sys admins who are good at UNIX once again
are not in much demand.
And the projects that Indian IT companies do only rarely involve UNIX.
Wipro has a reputation amongst all Indian companies for UNIX and good
work. I think that that is largely true.
It also has a very healthy employee firing policy in which
underperformers are very clearly given the pink slip.
Well this was not the case at Novell where I was one of the underperformers. ;)
Anyway now I can never accept that a market that relies on service
projects like India will value technical people and look for Linux
people.
Only companies with a strong product focus and doing hardcore
development work like embedded systems or automation or some such
thing which involves a lot of UNIX will look for good brains.
Such a thing has not happened in India in the last 60 years or so when
IT has been prevalent.
But I have not lost hope.
