[Ilugc] Re: Anna University Syllabus and NRCFOSS!

Dear Friends,
My suggestion : let us continue to introduce subjects in the
curriculum
subject to university norms, introduce FOSS
alternatives in labs, draw the
students towards FOSS
usage/projects, try to remove the restrictive clauses
like only
specific software should be used, and be ready to take advantage
of the changing scenarios.

Though I heard of FOSS Elective subject through my student Shajina K.P in 2006,
I was not able to take it up in my college then. Reason being the syllabus was
not put up in proper place in the Anna University website.
Again in 2008, I saw a mail in our ilugc which prompted me to contact Dr.
Srinivasan (formerly NRCFOSS) and I adopted FOSS Elective subject in
Rajalakshmi Engineering College. 260 students have been benefited through FOSS
Elective subject in last two years. I took - 2 hours for theory and 2 hours for
lab session.
CS2406 Open Source Lab has been introduced for students who have joined Engg.
from 2008 onwards in VII semester. Now all Engg. college students will get
benefited instead of few colleges like Rajalakshmi Engg. College and Jaya Engg.
College who had their faculty members promoting FOSS Elective subject.
I congratulate NRCFOSS Team and other ilugc members who have promoted FOSS to
this level.
Things to do further:
1. Students doing OOPS Lab using C++ have to do in Turbo C as stated in
University Syllabus. This has to change. Instead FOSS based IDE's could be used.
