Very true! Infact, I was very much impressed with Sun's Openlook (later CDE)
after having a hard time, though for a short while on Microsoft Windows 3.1
back in the '90s. Haven't chanced upon SGI IRIX as yet, but from
what I heard from a couple of SGI users, they were impressive and perfectly
well designed for their needs.
At times I still work on twm and appreciate its simplicity of UI design (an
efficient environment without double-click!) and there's GNUstep, yet
another well designed and usable environment. We have far too many choices
on Unix today to cater to different classes of people (with different
ideologies and personal tastes of course) - and the best part... they wont
lock us down ;-)
