If you use Linux you can do the same work efficiently with your old and
cheap
hardware. Linux/Unixes make you realise the full potential of the
hardware
you
have. That is basically because of the freedom to write good software.
You
would
never have to dump your hardware and go for a new one just because some
propreitry
software won't run on it.
Again, this is like comparing apples and oranges. You're wrong when you
say that you have to dump your hardware just because some propreitary
software on it...what you should be saying is that you have to upgrade
because if you want to make use of the newest features of some software,
you're gonna need the hardware to run it. If you're happy with MS Office
97, you can still run it very well on your Pentium 1/2...or you can even
go back to Office 95.
How does Linux make you realize the full potential of your hardware...by
providing a CUI for people who want to do word-processing? Have you seen
the latest versions of Gnome or Kde...I very much doubt whether they'll
run well on anything below a good P3. For example , on my comp, XP runs
a lot faster (I'm talking of the GUI) than Redhat 9 with bluecurve.
