Centrino Gets Open Source Linux Driver
Posted on Wednesday, March 10 @ 16:57:28 PST by donp
James Kenteros announced today on the linux kernel mailing list that an open
source driver for the Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 miniPCI network adapter is now
available (http://ipw2100.sourceforge.net/). Users of Centrino-based Intel
laptops can now use linux on their laptops and make use of the 802.11
wireless card inside.
This driver is a community project, supported by Intel, and is the first
time laptops with centrino hardware will be able to get linux support for
the 802.11 card. The driver is open source, released under the Gnu Public
License, but a special version of the radio's proprietary firmware needs to
be installed before the driver will work. The driver will install the
firmware automatically.
Currently the driver is developed enough to initialize the radio, scan for
access points, and associate to an AP in infrastructure mode. Future
releases will include ADHOC mode and WEP support.
